Every Christian needs to grow spiritually this year, particularly in love. While personal growth can seem overwhelming, focusing on small improvements can make a significant impact in our lives and communities.

Why Do We Need to Grow Spiritually?

Our mission is to love Jesus as He created us to be and to make Him known to others. However, who we are now is not sufficient to fulfill this mission - we each need to grow more like Jesus, especially in how we love others.

What Does Spiritual Growth Look Like?

Using 2 Peter 1:1-11 as a guide, spiritual growth involves:

  • Starting with faith
  • Adding virtue (honorable excellence)
  • Developing knowledge of Christ
  • Building self-control
  • Cultivating steadfastness
  • Growing in godliness
  • Showing brotherly affection
  • Culminating in Christ-like love

How Does Spiritual Growth Happen?

Growth happens through:

  • Intentional effort in committed relationships
  • Using God's promises and resources
  • Taking responsibility for our development
  • Putting ourselves in situations that encourage growth
  • Regular practice and discipline

What Prevents Spiritual Growth?

Common obstacles include:

  • Unwillingness to change
  • Not knowing how to grow
  • Lack of effort
  • Isolation from other believers
  • Waiting for crises to force growth

Life Application

This week, consider:

  • Where are you on Peter's list of spiritual qualities?
  • What's your next step of growth?
  • What relationships or situations could help facilitate that growth?
Challenge:

Put yourself in a "spiritual gym" this week - join a ministry, connect with a small group, or start a Bible study. Make an intentional choice to grow rather than waiting for circumstances to force growth.

Questions for Reflection:
  • What area of spiritual growth do you most need to focus on?
  • Who could partner with you in your growth journey?
  • How might your growth impact those around you?
