“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 NIV
Looking after widows and orphans, providing support and personal care, is critically important to our Lord. James describes such action as primary to a pure and faultless religion.
“Widows and orphans” represent the most vulnerable people within any community. In the first century a widow and her children were often destitute. The church responded with tangible support.
Within the community of our church family are single mothers and their children. Many of these devoted women receive little financial support of their effort to provide a good home for their children. It is not unusual for absent fathers to neglect their financial responsibility. Others, because of their own circumstances, are simply unable to provide any meaningful support.
Every year on Father’s Day we collect a second offering in Sunday morning services. Deacons stand at the exits and collect whatever our people are able to give. Funds are used to help single mothers with various financial challenges.
Rick Maynard, our Family Pastor, oversees distribution of the funds. He assists recipients in planning household budgets and investigates how our church family can help with unexpected expenses. Summer months can be expensive for any family and the challenge can create additional stress for the single mother.
This Sunday, June 21, is Father’s Day. Please support this worthwhile effort with whatever gift you can afford. Frankly, if each of us were to give $5 we would raise over $2,000 to help with the challenges faced by single moms and their children.
