When Joy is Difficult
For many, Christmas is a time of joy and excitement. But for others, the Holidays are not eagerly anticipated. It can be a time when we are acutely aware of the absence of loved ones, dissention and strain in family relationships, fear of the unknown of future days, or the uncertainty of a medical diagnoses. As we face some of these difficult situations, Christmas can be anything but happy. It is during these hard times that we should be reminded of the words of the angel speaking to the shepherds.
But the angel of the Lord said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” ~ Luke 2:10
What is Joy
JOY – Biblical joy – is an attitude God’s people adopt not because of happy circumstances but because of their hope in God’s love and promises. Christmas is the time we celebrate:
- God’s pursuit of us
- God’s desire to rescue us from our sinful state
- God providing the way for abundant life now and in eternity
Our current struggles are temporary, but God’s provision through his love and grace are eternal. And that is the reason we can have JOY, regardless of our current circumstances.
