Consider these clear directives from Scripture.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”Ephesians 4:29
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”James 1:22
If Paul were writing today he might very well pen, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths or through your fingers.” What we text, email, or post to social media is just as important as what we say with our voices.
We should THINK before we speak, text, email, or post!
Is it Truthful?
Proverbs 12:22 reads, “The Lord detests lying lips, but delights in people who are trustworthy.” Know that what you heard or read is true before you share.
Is it Helpful?
Ephesians 4:29 challenges us to communicate only that which builds others up? Ask yourself, “Will this benefit the hearer or reader?”
Is it Inspiring?
Social media can be an emotional beat-down! Don’t contribute to the ugly, degrading, disrespectful flow of words. Strive to inspire others through your posts.
Is it Necessary?
Just because we can say or write something doesn’t mean we should! Ask if the issue you feel compelled to respond to will even matter tomorrow!
Is it Kind?
Paul also instructs, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32) Ask yourself, “Will my words put the kindness of Jesus on display?” Belittling, mocking, or teasing others simply has no place in our communication.
