“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21 NIV)
I am a Christian. This is my personal declaration.
I am an American. This is my personal reality.
One of the greatest challenges I face is living this personal declaration within this personal reality.
It is all but impossible to divorce my declaration from my reality. By this I mean it is extremely difficult to view my commitment to Christ through any lens other than my western experience. This is a problem. This is a struggle.
Americans are among the wealthiest people the world has ever seen. This includes every one of us. I realize when we compare our situation to that of some of our fellow western citizens of the twenty-first century we are not what we might describe as wealthy. Yet when we compare ourselves to the rest of the world, the billions of other people living all around the world today, we are extremely wealthy.
This Sunday we will questions our priorities and the treasures we store up for ourselves. Prepare to be challenged.
