“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians 4:2 NIV
How devoted are you to prayer?
Like you, I fill twenty-four hours a day with various tasks and activities. Some make their way into my schedule every now and again. I enjoy them or recognize their value but I do not make them a daily priority. Other activities are more important or more valuable to me and I make them a priority in my daily routine.
Recently I made a list of things that are part of my daily routine. Obviously some activities, such as eating and sleeping, are essential to life. Other activities reflect choices I make about how I spend each day. For instance, in recent weeks I have tried to become more physically active and have set aside time for walking and running.
Looking over how I fill the hours of each day I clearly identify what I am devoted to.
I determined I have not made the practice of prayer a personal priority. I also determined that if prayer is to be prioritized I will need to identify activities less important to my personal well-being and replace them with prayer.
I will not devote myself to prayer unless I proactively and purposefully set aside time for prayer. Unless I change what I fill each day with I will be no more devoted to prayer next month as I am today.
Would you join me in determining which things must be abandoned in order to make room for prayer? I hope you will.
