Fifty percent of churches in North America average less than 75 in Sunday morning attendance. Ninety percent of North American churches average less than 350.
I share these numbers to illustrate what God has brought about at Alsbury.
Last Sunday 91 people were involved in our youth ministry alone. This exceeds the total attendance of fifty percent of all churches in North America.
The average number of people worshipping at Alsbury each week, 579 in August, significantly surpasses the attendance of ninety percent of all churches in North America.
Our goal is not to amass larger gatherings simply for the sake of numbers. If that were our goal we would simply draw a record crowd by giving a $100 bill to all in attendance!
Numbers represent people. People who are invaluable to Jesus. People seeking answers to their emptiness. People who long for meaning in their lives. You and I know the answers are found only in Jesus. I’m thankful for the opportunity to point an ever-growing number of people to Jesus for the only viable answer to their questions.
In October we celebrate our twenty-second anniversary as a church. The previous two decades have seen steady growth in every area of church life. Jesus has certainly done a great work at Alsbury and he is doing it through each of us as we share life together.
Our greatest days are those we have yet to live. Our greatest impact will be in the weeks, months, and years to come. We can not grow satisfied with what has already transpired, as significant as that is, but must instead strive to serve Christ with all that we have.
Someone might ask, “How big is ‘big enough?’” I would answer, “Just one person more.” Just one more person who will find Jesus, the answer to life’s most demanding questions.
