by Rick Maynard
I was a relatively new believer early in my first marriage. I had come to Christ a few years before, but had never really connected in the local church. It took a physical move to an entirely different part of the country to find connection. It was a move from a very small town in southeast New Mexico to an area just outside the 610 Loop in Houston, Texas.
Everything was new
And, with that came the beginning of new friendships
My wife and I joined an average size Baptist church in that northwest part of Houston. With that came the opportunity to join a small group of young married adults. It was there that we met David and Debbie, Fred and Jackie, Alf and Sherry, John and Jacque, and the small group leaders Rick and Linda. It was also there that lifelong friendships were formed. And, this came as a result of sharing life together those Houston years.
In the 40 years since my first encounter with this small group, changes have come to all of us. Each of our individual families have grown. Kids have grown up and have kids of their own. Most of us have moved to different locations of the country. David and Debbie and Alf and Sherry are no longer together. Fred has had cancer and is now in remission. Linda has passed away and Rick is now remarried. And, I am now married to Susan. However, the friendships have endured. In fact, before Hurricane Harvey came ashore, Susan and I planned to journey to Houston this week to spend a few days with John and Jacque in their home. Of course, that included the opportunity to see the Rangers beat the Astros in Minute Maid Park! But, obviously, things do not always go according to plan.
How can friendships survive the test of time and the challenges of life?
That only comes as a result of sharing life together. And, one place where life is shared with others is in a small group. Small Group is a place to Connect, to share life as we Become more fully devoted followers of Christ, and to Engage those around us with the message of the Gospel. If you have not yet connected through the Small Groups Ministry of Alsbury, what are you waiting for?
